          Families Who Lost Homes Asking for Assistance
        Two families who lost housing due to recent flooding in the Manzano Mountains are asking for community assistance, according to Billie Clark, programs manager at the Torrance County Project Office. The man is sleeping in his truck, and is without power for his oxygen and nebulizer. The woman has two school age teenagers and has a shelter but no power or water. She is also on a nebulizer and has no power. The youths lost their school clothes and supplies.

        Bear Sightings Close Several Picnic Areas
        Cienega, Sulphur and Doc Long picnic areas in the Sandia Ranger District have been closed since the weekend due to bear activity. New Mexico Game and Fish is setting traps to relocate two bears that have come to the areas to forage for food. The Forest Service hopes to have the area open within two weeks, according to Karen Takai, public information officer for the Sandia Ranger District.
        Cedar Crest Poet Wins Atlanta Review Contest
        Jamie Morewood Anderson of Cedar Crest has won the Grand Prize of $2,008 in Atlanta Review's Poetry 2008 International Poetry Competition.
        Her poem "Winter Milk" won in competition with thousands of poems from dozens of countries across the globe. Her prize-winning poem will be published this fall in the special Poetry 2008 Issue of Atlanta Review, available in bookstores or from www.atlantareview.com.
        Of herself, Jamie says "I live in the high mountains and live a quiet rural life, surrounded by lots of pets, plants and books. It thrills me when my writing reflects this, as in the poem 'Winter Milk.' " More information is available from the author at JamiesTurkeys@aol.com.
        Support Group For Grandparents Offered
        Monthly Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support/discussion groups are offered at various locations in Bernalillo County and one in Sandoval County.
        Please call Outcomes, Inc. and ask to speak with either Debbie Vigil or Debbie Trujillo at 243-2551 for more information and to request a schedule of locations and times. No fee for groups or for childcare during the groups.
        Edgewood Civitan Club Looking for Members
        A new Edgewood Civitan Club being formed is looking for volunteers interested in having fun while working to make Edgewood an even better place to live.
        Club organizers would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering by joining the new Edgewood Civitan Club to attend one of the two organizational meetings. The first meeting will be Sept. 11 at the Edgewood Community Center at 6 p.m. Snacks will be provided. Please come by to learn what Civitan is all about and see how easy it is to become a Charter Member.
        The club will meet the second and third Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the Edgewood Community Center.
