Write-In Candidate Ex-Fire Volunteer
Telegraph Staff Report
The upcoming election at the Village of Tijeras has only one write-in candidate, Willy Nuanez.
Nuanez is running for a four-year council seat. There are two open this election and he will run against longtime incumbents Don Johnson and Maxine Wilson, who both filed their paperwork in time to be on the ballot.
Nuanez, who was with the village fire department as a volunteer for 21 years, said he is running because he feels the fire department needs a change.
"The (village) fire department has become nonexistent in a way," he said. "We have $1.5 million of new equipment and no one to use it."
Nuanez said there are a few ways he would deal with the problem.
He suggested more active volunteers, or that the village turn the fire department to an all-paid force or a combination of paid and volunteer members. He said another solution is to simply turn the department and equipment over to Bernalillo County.
Nuanez is 52 years old and a lifelong resident of Tijeras.
