Moriarty Rodeo Is Getting Bigger and Better

By Laura Nesbitt
Mountain View Telegraph
Bull riding and rodeo are “good family fun” that Bill Howard, president of the Heritage Committee, wants to bring to Moriarty.
“In the past they've had rodeos (in the Heritage Arena) but they've only been high school or half-a-day deal,” Howard said.
According to Howard, the riders this year are “working their way into the (Pro Rodeo Cowboy's Association).”
The Moriarty Fourth of July Rodeo will be held at the city's Heritage Arena on July 4 and 5, at 2 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. But the annual event's format, including a change from a one-day schedule to two days, will be different this year.
Events on both days include bull riding, bareback riding, saddlebronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, ladies breakaway roping, ladies barrel racing and team roping.
Lynn Howard, Susan Weyrich and Matthew Tanner gave an update on fundraising efforts by the Heritage Committee to Moriarty City Councilors at Tuesday's meeting.
Councilors approved up to $1,400 in general fund money for the group that will be used to augment money already raised for cash prizes.
A total of $2,404 has been raised by members from donations from businesses and individuals in the area.
“Even though times are hard, they really dug deep into their pockets because they want to see it happen,” Howard said about the people who have donated.
Entry fee for each event is $75, and it costs $200 per team roping pair.
Cost to get into the rodeo is $2 per individual and $8 for a carload of four or more.
The Saturday dance will cost $3 a person or $5 a couple.
For information about the rodeo or joining the committee, call Howard at 832-5587, Susan Weyrich, the Moriarty association secretary, at 384-1300, or go to nmrodeo.org.
