    District To Meet
    On Bond Election
    The Moriarty-Edgewood School District will hold a meeting today on the upcoming bond election.
    The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. in the Moriarty High School board room.
    Edgewood Hosts
    'Listening Tour'
    Congresswoman Heather Wilson will be at the Edgewood Community Center from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday as part of her "Listening Tour."
    Wilson will discuss issues including national security, the war on terror, taxes, health care, education and the economy, according to a news release from her office.
    Festival of Lights
    Parade Friday
    Moriarty's annual Festival of Lights Parade is scheduled for Friday.
    The parade— featuring vehicles, floats and even individuals decorated with twinkling holiday lights— will run down Old Route 66 starting at 6:30 p.m. Parade lineup begins at 6 p.m. at Tillery Chevrolet.
    The Festival of Lights Business Open House will follow the parade, until approximately 8:30 p.m. Various Moriarty businesses will offer snacks and treats and stay open later than normal.
    On Saturday, the Festival of Lights Craft Fair and Santa Claus will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Moriarty Civic Center. The event includes arts and crafts booths, food, music, photos with Santa and more.

    Christmas Parade
    Slated for Sat.
    The Mountainair Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday.
    Lineup will begin at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Assembly of God campground. The theme is "Christmas Carols."

    The Mountainair Christmas Crafts Fair is scheduled for Sunday.
    The event will run from noon to 7 p.m. at the Dr. Saul Community Center.

    EMHS Holds First
    Holiday Craft Fair
    Everyone is invited to the East Mountain High School Student Government's inaugural Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday.
    The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school campus at 25 La Madera Road in Sandia Park. Admission is free.
    Visitors will be able to shop stress-free and support their community at the same time. Concessions will be available.

    Fundraiser Offers
    Breakfast, Santa
    The East Mountain Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Breakfast with Santa fundraiser on Saturday.
    The event will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras.
    A full hot breakfast will be offered at a cost of $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12. The event will also include entertainment, other activities and photos with Santa Claus.

    Hear 'Messiah' For
    Free Starting Sun.
    The East Mountain Community Chorus will offer its traditional free performances of Handel's "Messiah" this holiday season.
    This year's concerts are scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. and Dec. 8 and 9, both at 3 p.m., at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Cedar Crest.
    East Mountain Community Chorus singers have ranged in age from 11 to more than 80 years old. Singers of all experience levels are welcome to join the chorus, although auditions are required for those wishing to sing a solo part.
    In recent years, the chorus has numbered more than 70 singers with an orchestra of about 15 musicians, many of them youths. Most of them live in the East Mountains, and entire East Mountains families join in the singing of the "Messiah."
    Although no admission is charged, a freewill offering is taken. Proceeds benefit the Bethel Community Storehouse and Joy Junction.
    Madrid To Hold
    Annual Parade
    Madrid will mark the 25th anniversary of its Christmas celebrations with the traditional parade on Saturday.
    The parade will start at 4 p.m. and run from the area of the Chumani Gallery to the Oscar Huber ballpark.
    A Christmas decorating and lighting contest will be judged on Friday evening.
    The celebration will continue through every weekend in December as Madrid businesses host open houses and stay open later than usual.

    Holiday Festival
    Focuses on Safety
    A free Public Safety Holiday Festival will be held Saturday in Estancia.
    The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Estancia Community Center. It will include games and prizes, along with crime prevention and fire safety information. New Mexico State Police will be passing out free DNA kits and New MexiKids will be handing out information on its free/low-cost health insurance program for children.
    There will also be pie throwing at the sheriff and police chiefs.

    Chamber To Hold
    Blood Drive Sat.
    The East Mountain Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a blood drive in conjunction with its annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday.
    The United Blood Services Bloodmobile will be at Los Vecinos Community Center from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
    To donate, schedule an appointment in advance at www.bloodhero.com with the sponsor code EastMountain, or call chamber secretary Ellen Ashcraft at 281-9676.
    Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments mean less waiting time.
    Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and have not donated in the past 56 days. Bring identification or a blood donor card, and be prepared to discuss any medications you are taking and to discuss travel outside of the United States or Canada in the past three years.
    2 Alpaca Ranches
    Hold Festivities
    Milagro Moon Ranch and Enchanted Sky Alpacas will host a Holiday Boutique and Open Ranch Days on Saturday and Sunday.
    Festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
    The two East Mountains alpaca ranches offer alpaca fiber products, goat's milk soap and other gift items.

    Lions Club Hosts
    Christmas Party
    The American Legion Post 74 and Auxiliary are inviting the public to join them for their annual Christmas party on Saturday at the Lions Club building in Moriarty.
    Turkey, ham, rolls and drinks will be provided, and visitors are asked to bring side dishes, salads or desserts.
    Instead of a gift exchange, everyone is asked to bring new socks, underwear or comfort items to be taken to the VA Hospital in Albuquerque.
    Bethel Offers Free
    Christmas Toys
    Free Christmas toys and stockings will be available to low-income families from now through Dec. 21 at the Bethel Community Storehouse in Moriarty.
    The gifts and stockings will be distributed every Tuesday through Friday from noon to 3:45 p.m.
    Requirements are proof of income or a qualified referral, picture ID and proof of residency.

    Authors To Sign
    Books at Library
    Two local authors will be signing their books at the Moriarty Community Library on Saturday.
    Craig Nettleton of Tijeras, author of "Rocks in My Bed," and Ben Steinlage of Mountainair, author of "Want to Go West, Lady?" will be signing their books and visiting with folks who drop by the library between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Tree Permits To
    Be Sold at 2 Sites
    The Mountainair Ranger District will be selling Christmas tree permits at two locations this holiday season.
    Permits for Red Canyon will be sold at Red Canyon Campground only on Saturday and Sunday and Dec. 8-9.
    Permits for Gallinas will be sold through Dec. 24 at the district office.
    The cost of a permit is $10 per tree, with a 10-foot maximum. Each household is limited to one permit, and up to four additional permits can be purchased for family or friends.

    Features Artists
    Turquoise Trail Gallery will feature members Gail Diane Yovanovich and Lesley Long this weekend and throughout the month.
    An award-winning photographer, Yovanovich offers giclee prints of hummingbirds and nature images as well as classic black-and-white documentary photos.
    Long paints imaginative, colorful animals and dreamscapes, and does drawings and ceramic pins.
    A reception will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at 12216 N. Highway 14, Cedar Crest.

    Rio Grande Show
    A number of East Mountains artists will be exhibiting their work at the 8th Annual Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival in Albuquerque this weekend.
    The show runs Friday through Sunday in the Manuel Lujan Exhibit Complex at Expo New Mexico, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is $6 for adults.
    Local exhibitors include Gloria McAfee of Tijeras (storyteller), Reynold and Charen Stafford of Tijeras (carved Southwest wood furniture and accessories), Jas Simmons of Edgewood (gold and silver stacking rings), Kim Mason of Moriarty (jewelry and accessories from recycled materials), Janet Tamar Behl of Sandia Park (leather garments and accessories), Philip Green of Sandia Park (raku-fired ceramic clocks), and George and Kathy Toya of Sandia Park (original designs painted on clothing).
