    Mountainair author Ben Steinlage will be at the East Mountain Library in Tijeras today to talk about and sign his book, "Want to Go West, Lady?"
    The free event will run from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

    Planning Panel
    To Meet Earlier
    The time of today's Estancia Planning Commission meeting has been changed from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is a one-time change, according to town officials.
    Also, because of the holidays, the planning commission will meet only once a month in November and December. The meetings will be on the second Thursday of those months, today and Dec. 13.

    Free Star Party
    At Wildlife West
    The Albuquerque Astronomical Society and the Edgewood Parks and Recreation Department will host the Edgewood Star Party on Friday at Wildlife West Nature Park.
    Telescopes will be set up in a flat field, shielded from the highway light. Visitors to this free event will be able to see the splendor of the Andromeda and M-33 galaxies; watch Perseus rise during the dark, moonless night; and observe, through telescopes, stars of the M-13 globular cluster.
    Park personnel will direct visitors to the viewing site. Observing will commence at sunset. Free hot apple cider and popcorn will be provided.
    Pets are not allowed in the viewing area.
    Visitors are advised to dress warmly. A wood-burning stove in the Wildlife West bean barn will provide warmth between star viewings.

    Friday's Movie
    Is 'Spider-Man 3'
    Free Friday Night Movies will return to the Moriarty Community Center this week.
    This month's feature will be the PG-rated "Spider-Man 3." The show runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and drinks and snacks are sold.

    Kids Can Read
    To Dogs Saturday
    Children of all ages are invited to Read to the Dogs at the East Mountain Library on Saturday between 1 and 2 p.m.
    Children should check in at the information desk to be assigned to a dog and to get a bookmark if they don't have one yet. The children will receive a photo sticker of each dog they read to.

    'Fee-Free Day'
    At Cibola Forest
    Sunday will be a "Fee-Free Day" in Cibola National Forest in honor of Veterans Day and those who have served in the armed forces.
    All fees in the Sandia Ranger District will be waived Sunday, and all overnight camping fees will be waived at campgrounds that normally charge a fee in Cibola National Forest.

    Brass Quintet To
    Play for EMAS
    Guest artists from the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra's brass section will perform for the second concert of the East Mountain Artists Series' 2007-2008 Season on Sunday.
    The NMSO Brass Quintet will present selections to suit all tastes, ranging from classical works to "popular" classics.
    The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra features the talents of a distinguished group of brass section leaders who also entertain audiences with their brilliant blend in ensemble performances: John Marchiando and Mark Hyams on trumpet, Peter Ulffers on French horn, Debra Taylor on trombone and Richard White on tuba.
    The concert will be held at 3 p.m. at the Mountainside United Methodist Church in Cedar Crest.
    Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $5 for students under 18 and free for those age 4 and under. Tickets are available at the door. Free refreshments and child care are provided.

    Jan. 20— The Sierra Trio plays Beethoven.
    Feb. 23— Auditions for the Annual Youth Concert.
    March 9— EMAS presents the 12th Annual Youth Concert, featuring students from elementary through high school age.
    April 20— Trio New Mexico, artists in residence at University of New Mexico, will perform Beethoven and Mozart as well as original works.
    May 11— The Sierra Trio continues its tradition of beautiful music on Mother's Day.
    Historical Society
    To Meet Sunday
    The public is invited to become acquainted with the East Mountain Historical Society by attending its annual meeting Sunday at the Sandia Ranger Station's large conference room.
    Live local music and refreshments will be provided.
    The historical society will be honoring public officials who have helped in efforts to preserve the addition to the Gutierrez Canyon Open Space off North N.M. 14 in Cedar Crest. The society is optimistically hoping for a January closing on the open space purchase after a few important issues are settled.
    The public meeting will begin at 2 p.m. President Anabel Sanchez will review the society's accomplishments and plans for the future. Preservation Chairman Andre Larroque will honor state and local representatives who over the past year have helped secure funds for procurement of the open space.
    Bethel Gives Out
    Free Food Boxes
    The Bethel Community Storehouse in Moriarty will distribute holiday food boxes to low- and no-income families and individuals Tuesday through Friday throughout the month of November.
    Food boxes will be distributed from noon to 3:45 p.m. Requirements are proof of income or a qualified referral, picture ID and proof of residency such as a current bill.
