Old Timer's Day Music Festival Is on Tap

By Laura Nesbitt

And not just old-timers are invited.
The annual Estancia Old Timer's Day Music Festival on Saturday will bring entertainment, reunion and games once again to Arthur Park, beginning with a parade at 11 a.m., a barbecue afterward and an evening dance, along with other festivities.
This year is the all-school reunion that is held only every two years on even-numbered years. The Alumni Association will hold elections and give a report on the scholarships they have given out in the past year to Estancia High School seniors.
Graduating senior Clayton Gardner received a $1,000 scholarship, and Cabrini Torres received a $500 scholarship from the association. The awards were announced at the high school's graduation ceremony May 24, counselor Alan Carson said.
"Anyone who attended Estancia High School, whether they graduated or not" is invited to come to the Old Timer's Day event and celebrate with other fellow alumni, Bernardine Dial, who has lived in Estancia since she was in the seventh grade, said.
Of course one does not have to have gone to Estancia High School to go to Old Timer's Day.
This year the Alumni Association mailed out "hundreds and hundreds of letters" notifying former students of the event. The association will hold its general meeting and then hold a silent auction at the park, Dial said.
To march in the parade, participants should line up at the courthouse at 10:30 a.m. This year's theme is "The Life of a Settler." There will be prizes offered in different categories. Top prize this year is $25 cash.
There will be barbecue for $6 a plate, horseshoes and sand volleyball.
The Williams Memorial Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the pool will be open for swimming.
The country western music band, Just Us, with Tom Williams will play music in the park from noon until 4 p.m.
Then Pat Ortiz will mix up his stack of CDs at the Estancia Community Center from 8 p.m. until midnight for $5 a person and $10 a couple.
