Water Draft Open to Comment

By Laura Nesbitt
Mountain View Telegraph
Members of the Estancia Basin Water Planning Committee have completed a draft of an update of the 1999 Estancia Basin regional water plan and is ready for public feedback.
"It's our job to think outside of the box and to look into the future for water needs," said Ryan Schwebach, chairman of the board.
Committee members struggled momentarily at the beginning of the year when Jim Corbin, technical adviser since the late 1990s, resigned.
But David Chace stepped up to the plate to complete an update of their regional water plan in time for a deadline of June 30.
Members hope to address whatever legitimate comments and concerns the public submits during meetings which possibly will be held in November.
But there are guidelines to follow when submitting comments.
"If it's anonymous we're not going to look at it. We're looking for legitimate concerns and questions," Schwebach said. If the committee has a question they need to be able to contact someone to have that question explained, so responses must be in writing with a name and contact information.
Other things reflected in the update are expected population growth in the area, and possible plans for a water system, Schwebach said.
"Between (1999) and now we've had several large companies looking at Edgewood's growth, which is phenomenal and has to be addressed," Schwebach said.
Another thing for the public to keep in mind is that the committee's mission is strictly planning.
"Doing it is up to counties and cities," Schwebach said.
The public is welcome to peruse a limited amount of hard copies at all three soil and water conservation districts, Claunch-Pinto, Edgewood and East Torrance, Schwebach said.
For more information, call or e-mail Cheri Lujan, district manager of East Torrance Soil and Water Conservation District at 384-2272 or cheri.lujan@nm.nacdnet.net.
