          Public Hearing Set For Charter School
        The New Mexico Public Education Commission has scheduled a public hearing at the Moriarty Civic Center for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. to hear from the Resource and Learning Center. The application for the charter school, which would be the new incarnation of the Estancia Valley Learning Center, states that it would be independent of the districts in the region and is interested in working with other institutions such as Mesalands Community College, UNM-Valencia and Hogares, Inc.

        Get Water Rights Queries Answered
        A representative from the Office of the State Engineer, District 1, will be in the USDA Forest Service office in Estancia on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions about water rights and related issues.
        Residents can also declare ground or surface water rights for drilling new wells then. The building is on the west side of Main Street at the south end of town. For more information, call 384-2272 ext. 3.
        Mounted Shooting Contest in Moriarty
        Western Shooting Horse, a Tijeras-based national shooting horse sports magazine, will host the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association Labor Day Classic at the Moriarty Heritage Rodeo Arena in Moriarty on Aug. 30-31.
        The event will feature a six-stage Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association-sanctioned double points competition, with the main match stages being shot on Saturday and Sunday. A two-stage Eliminator as well as a rifle competition will also take place on Saturday.
        The Labor Day Classic will start with stage one and two of the main match on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m., followed immediately by the two-stage Eliminator and one of the rifle stages. Stages three through six begin at 10 on Aug. 31 followed by stage two of the rifle competition. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend. There are no spectator entry or parking fees.
        Western vendors and food concessions will be on site both days, including Western Shooting Horse Magazine, which will be giving out free copies of the magazine.
        The public is invited to bring their children and participate in a family play day put on by Broomes Feed and the Moriarty Heritage Rodeo Association. The children's fun day includes horse activities and contests and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
        Preacher Jerry Buchanan will perform a musical Cowboy Church on Sunday at 8 a.m. The public is also invited. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided free of charge.

        Arts Fest Event At Aspects of Clay
        The Mountain Arts Fest is holding an event on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1, at Aspects of Clay, 12469 N.M. 14 at the Sandia Crest Byway.
        More than 30 artists will show their unique creations covering all mediums: pottery, jewelry, handcrafted furniture, painting, sculpture, fabric art, woodworking and many others.

        Diabetes Cooking School Next Month
        New Mexico State University is holding a four-week diabetes cooking school at the Lions Club in Moriarty. Participants will receive recipe booklets, prepare meals and taste foods made with reduced fat, sugar and salt.
        The class is free but is limited to 25 participants. The first session is Sept. 4, and class meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants must commit to attending every class. Call 246-4790 for more information.
        Celebration Adds Sports Contests
        The Deputy James McGrane East Mountain Celebration will be held on Sept. 5, 6 and 7 at Vista Grande Community Center.
        This year there will be three sporting events: an adult softball tournament, youth basketball tournament and a 3-kilometer (1.86-mile) trail run/walk.
        The proceeds from the sporting events will go to advanced officer survival training for law enforcement officers throughout the state through a fund set up by the parents of James McGrane, a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Tijeras in 2006.
        The sporting events will be in addition to the celebration's usual complement of bands, information booths, food booths and other weekend activities.
        Old Fashioned Day At Stanley Church
        The Stanley Union Church will hold its annual Old Fashioned Day on Sept. 7.
        Worshippers are encouraged to attend services dressed up in old fashions. After services, the church will hold a celebration of Stanley's agricultural roots with a potluck and pie auction that benefit the church.
        Stanley Union Church is a nondenominational church on N.M. 41 just north of the N.M. 472 intersection.
