Run, Rally and Rock Celebrates Edgewood

By Lee Ross
Mountain View Telegraph
Run, Rally and Rock is a party for a changed Edgewood.
That's according to Myra Oden, the executive director of the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce and the event's organizer.
"I think that Edgewood has a lot to celebrate," Oden said. "Whether you're a business person or a resident, I think the feeling of community is starting to come together ... we all realize we have a lot to be proud of in this community."
She cited recent changes such as wider streets and intersections, street lights, sidewalks and paths along N.M. 344 and Old Route 66, more shopping centers in town and Moriarty Municipal Schools' recent name change to the Moriarty-Edgewood School District.
"I think that everybody has started to feel that our perception is pretty darn good these days. We're not just a wide place in the road anymore," she said.
Run, Rally and Rock is changing this year too. Rather than split events between the Rich Ford dealership and Wildlife West Nature Park, the entire festival will be at the nature park. Oden said there are 50 vendors at the business expo this year, instead of the 30 vendors at last year's event, as a result of the change.
She said there is more space and there are more activities available at Wildlife West, she said.
Although there have been tractor drives in the past, another new element this year is the parade, which should be filled with bands, bikes and cars. Oden said it may be Edgewood's first ever.
"Moriarty has had parades forever. Everybody always comes out for those and is really excited about them," she said. "We're hoping that the community will come out for this one as well."
Those in the parade will meet at Edgewood Elementary at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and start heading south on state Route 344 at 10:30 a.m. From there it goes to North Frontage Road, where it will head east to end at Wildlife West.
There will be awards for the best Route 66, classic car, music, decorated bicycle, and equestrian entries. To enter, call 286-2577.
Events at Wildlife West start Friday with a sock hop at 7 p.m., where there will be an Elvis and hula hoop contest. The cost is $10 per person.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday there will be a farmer's market, business showcase, art show, carnival games, wine tasting, music, and a horseshoe pitching tournament, along with other entertainment. The cost to enter the park is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $4 for students with identification. Children younger than 12 and military personnel with identification are free.
At 7 p.m. Saturday is a Chuck Wagon Dinner and live entertainment. It will cost $17.50 for adults, $16.50 for seniors and $10 for children ages 5 to 11. Children younger than 5 are free.
The Pronghorn Fun Run is Sunday at 8 a.m. and there is a $20 entry fee. Entrants can opt for a 5K run, a one mile walk or kids younger than 7 can go for a quarter-mile. The run is followed by a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m., which is $4 for adults and $2 for children.
For more information on any event, call the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce at 286-2577 or Wildlife West at 263-9453.
