Park Construction Begins

Construction has begun on the $375,000 veterans memorial and Luis Garcia Park in Tijeras. The park, between the East Mountain Library and the historic Holy Child Church, is dedicated in remembrance of Luis Garcia, a Tijeras resident who was killed in a notorious shooting along with two friends as they sat in their car in Sandia Knolls on May 29, 1999. In addition, a veterans memorial will be included in the park.
Veterans of the Vietnam War or their relatives who have been residents of the East Mountains or are natives of the East Mountains can apply to be the first to have their names put on a memorial wall in Tijeras.
Applicants must provide military form DD-214 to confirm the time they served. Applications are available at the Tijeras Village Hall. Call 281-1220 for information.
The memorial is scheduled to be dedicated Sept. 20, with a presentation by the East Mountain Historical Society.
The festivities may include a flyover by military aircraft, according to Tijeras Village Clerk/Treasurer Daniel Abram.
