          Watershed Focus Of Two Meetings
        Two public meetings to discuss an emergency watershed protection program are scheduled for Tuesday at Tajique Community Center and Aug. 21 at Torreon Community Center. Both meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.
        Organizers are asking that anyone who has been affected or might be affected by either the Trigo Fire or the Big Springs Fire to attend.
        The meetings are sponsored by East Torrance, Claunch-Pinto and Edgewood soil and water conservation districts, Torrance County and the USDA-NRCS.

        Animal Shelter To List on Web Site
        The town of Mountainair Animal Shelter recently joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet. The site has over 200,000 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously.
        More than 10,500 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. Town of Mountainair Animal Shelter be viewed at www.petfinder.com/shelters/NM119.html. A potential adopter enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the Zip code entered. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies.
        Red Cross Needs Some Volunteers
        The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers.
        A volunteer orientation will take place Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Estancia Town Hall.
        The basic disaster volunteer course covers how community agencies work together to prepare and respond to disasters.
        Register by Sept. 3 by calling 384-2709.
        SBA Is Offering Disaster Loans
        Small, non-farm businesses in all 33 New Mexico counties, include Torrance, Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties, can now apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
        The loans are designed to offset economic losses due to the drought that began in October 2007.

        Health Center To Register Voters
        As a part of the national "Community Health Vote" initiative, the community health center in Edgewood will provide nonpartisan voter registration from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
        The clinic is located on Medical Center Road by Edgewood Middle School.
        Used Hearing Aids, Glasses Wanted
        Used hearing aids and eyeglasses can be donated to the Sandia Mountain Lions Club in boxes placed throughout the East Mountains. These items will be recycled to persons in Third World countries through the efforts of Lions members and organizations concerned with providing vision and hearing assistance to the needy.
        Any hearing aids and prescription glasses can be placed in donation boxes at these locations: East Mountain Chamber of Commerce in the Tijeras Visitors Center, East Mountain Library, Village of Tijeras offices, Los Vecinos Community Center, all located in Tijeras. In Cedar Crest, boxes are at McLeod Medical Center, Dr. James Retzer DDS, Cedar Crest Vision Center, Kokopelli's Restaurant, and Cedar Point Grille. Sam's Club on Eubank in Albuquerque also has a box.
        These collections are part of the service offered by local Lions to assist efforts in sight preservation around the world. The Club also sponsors the New Mexico Eye Van which provides vision screening at various community activities throughout the year.
        The Sandia Mountain Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. For more information about local club activities and membership, call President Jim Medford at 281-5373.
