3 College Classes Available in Moriarty

By Rory Mcclannahan
Mountain View Telegraph
Estancia Valley residents will have the chance to take three college courses in Moriarty this fall.
Mesalands Community College will offer English 102, Political Science 102 and Business 101 classes at Moriarty High School starting Aug. 25, said Geri Salazar, grants administrator for the city of Moriarty and a member of the Needs and Means Study of Universities Committee.
“This is something great for the whole area,” Salazar said. “We've been working on this for two years.”
And if everything works according to plan, more lower- and upper-level college classes will be offered in Moriarty.
Salazar said that Central New Mexico Community College and New Mexico Highlands University also are interested in the Estancia Valley.
The effort to attract colleges to offer classes in the area has been ongoing for more than two years, but a survey done in June 2007 suggested there was a need.
In the survey, 588 of 652 respondents, or 90 percent, said they would be interested in attending college classes offered in the area. The Edgewood area made up the largest group of respondents, at 253 people, or 40 percent. People in the Moriarty area accounted for 23 percent of those responding to the survey.
“We've always known there was a need for college-level classes in the Estancia Valley,” Salazar said.
At a June 30 meeting of the committee, a representative from New Mexico Highlands said 17 students in the area were contacted and expressed an interest in business and education courses. But the biggest need will be for core classes, the representative said.
In addition, Jane Bradley, director of education partnerships for CNM, said the community college will not offer fall classes, but left the possibility open for courses in the spring.
The classes offered by Mesalands will start on Aug. 25. The English and political science courses will both be held each Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the high school. The business class will be held each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, also at the school.
Interested students must enroll with Mesalands by Aug. 21. Enrollment can be done online or at walk-in registration, scheduled for Aug. 6.
