      Community Watch Meeting Tonight
       Edgewood's Business Community Watch, a group of residents concerned about crime and burglaries, is having a meeting today at 7 p.m. at the Edgewood Community Center.
       Scheduled presentations include placement of signs and an update on the formation of the Edgewood Police Department by Chief Paul Welch.
      
       Firearms Event Set for Saturday
       The Torrance County Farm and Livestock Bureau will sponsor a special event on dealing with firearms safety and laws on agricultural lands on Saturday at the McIntosh Community Center.
       Donn Gallahue, certified NRA firearms instructor, will lead the free event.
       It will start at 2 p.m., with an ice cream social to follow at 3 p.m. The Farm Bureau Youth Association will show the movie “Cowbells” for children.
      
       Training Program At Roosevelt
       A training about homeowners associations, theft and fire prevention, and homeland security is scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Roosevelt Middle School.
       The program will be taught by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and the Bernalillo County Fire Department, along with the East Mountain Interagency Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Forest Service.
      
       Bake Sale To Help 6-Year-Old Girl
       Members of the Moriarty Fire Department will hold a bake sale and car wash this weekend to benefit the family of Nichole Zolman. Nichole, who is 6 and lives in Moriarty, recently had a large tumor removed from her brain that caused blindness in one eye and limited vision in the other.
       The bake sale will be Saturday and Sunday at Wal-Mart in Edgewood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
       The car wash is Saturday in the Arby's parking lot from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
       Also, the firefighters are selling $25 tickets for a benefit dinner that includes entertainment and a silent auction on May 31 at the Lion's Club in Moriarty.
       The big prize in the auction is a two-night, three-day stay in Chama.

       Moriarty Cleanup Starts on Friday
       The Moriarty Chamber of Commerce and the city of Moriarty are sponsoring the Annual Cleanup, Friday through May 18, except for May 11.
       During the cleanup, the city will pick up old appliances and large items for dumping.
       The city will provide roll-off trash containers for city residents to dump all of their trash free of charge. The containers will be behind the Moriarty Fire Station at 210 Broadway.
       A wood chipper will be available for yard waste.
       A water bill and driver's license are needed for proof of residency.
       For assistance or pickup, residents can call 832-4406.
      
       Help Out To Make Edgewood Clean
       The town of Edgewood will hold its town cleanup on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
       A Dumpster will be set up at the Edgewood town offices for residents to drop off trash and yard waste. The town is also looking for volunteers to help pick up trash on town roads.
       A pizza party will be held at noon at the town offices.
       The event is sponsored by the town of Edgewood and the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce.
      
       Learn All About Forests Saturday
       The Backyard Tree Farm Program is gearing up.
       A “jump-start” meeting is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras.
       For the past 20 years, the program has served as a way for New Mexicans to learn how to care for their part of the forest.
       The meeting will help people learn about fire dangers, thinning techniques, beetle infestation, soil erosion, managing water resources, and finding money through grants and other programs.
      
       Sign Up for Child Find Program
       Parents are encouraged to sign their children up for Child Find.
       The next sign-up event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Mountainair Elementary School.
       Sign up is for children ages 1 to 6.
      
       Stargazing Party At Nature Park
       There will be a star party at Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood on Friday starting at 8 p.m. Telescopes and astronomers will be available to aid in night-sky viewing. There will be games, popcorn and hot apple cider. The event and the snacks are free.
