      Area Residents Discuss Commute
       In January, University of New Mexico Institute for Public Policy facilitated a citizen conference in Moriarty to discuss long-range planning recommendations for New Mexico Department of Transportation, according to a UNM news release.
       Eight people were recruited from the Moriarty area to question travel experts about transportation issues including “adding, or creating from existing lanes, HOV lanes for I-25 and I-40 in and out of Albuquerque,” the news release states.
      
       Early Voting Begins May 17
       Early voting in Santa Fe for the June 3 primary begins May 17 at the Edgewood Fire Station from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The site will also be open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Early voting ends May 31.
      
       Governor Awards Shelter Manager
       Sanctuary Zone Director Betty Summers received a Governor's Volunteer Administrator of the Year Award on April 25 at the Hotel Albuquerque.
       The award honors an individual who exhibits “solid volunteer management skills,” according to Julia Reeves, program manager of the New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism.
       The Sanctuary Zone is a domestic violence emergency shelter in Torrance County that received nonprofit status in 2002.
       Its goal is to heal families and put victims of domestic violence into safe living situations.
       Summers had the idea for a shelter when her sister became a victim of domestic violence.
      
       Earth Source Now Products Dealer
       Earth Source Construction of Moriarty is now an official dealer for Form Systems Inc. and LOGIX Insulating Concrete Forms products.
       Earth Source's owner, Sean Schmidt, specializes in the construction of environmentally friendly buildings.

       Tri-Chamber Golf Classic Sept. 11
       The East Mountain, Edgewood and Moriarty Chambers of Commerce are hosting what is being called the Tri-Chamber Golf Classic on Sept. 11 at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club.
       The tournament will feature guest speakers who will talk on subjects ranging from local interest to Talking Talons to national health care.
       To play, prices range from $150 for an individual to $500 for a team of four, which includes a goody-bag and meals. An additional $500 for a group of four pays for company advertising at the clubhouse.

       Johnson's Artwork Shown at Chamber
       The work of Edgewood artist FD Johnson is on display at the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce.
       Johnson specializes in Western and Southwestern art.
       Visitors can view the artwork from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the chamber office, 1916 Old Route 66 in Edgewood.
      
       Free Clinic Offered For U.S. Veterans
       Dr. Ann Morgan of Morgan Oriental Medicine in Edgewood is offering a free acupuncture clinic for all U. S. veterans.
       The program, called “First Fridays for Veterans,” is a free clinic the first Friday of every month. The next clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
       “Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be very helpful for the treatment of pain, and has also shown to be helpful for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I wanted to do something for our armed forces veterans who have given so much to our country,” Morgan said.

       Sunflower Festival Spaces Available
       The 10th annual Mountainair Sunflower Festival, sponsored by the Manzano Mountain Art Council, is scheduled Aug. 23. Applications are now available for artists, craftspeople and other exhibitors wishing to sell their wares at this annual end-of-summer event. New categories this year are collectibles, and farmers market produce and plants.        Paving Company Is Unlicensed
       An unlicensed company called Tri-State Paving is doing paving work in the East Mountains, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
       The Sheriff's Department has been receiving complaints about the company and has had complaints filed against it in the past.

       Center Makes Improvements
       Los Vecinos Community Center has recently completed a number of improvements to its site to make it wheelchair accessible, including several 8-foot and 4-foot concrete pathways for access to outdoor areas.
       The center is also offering a number of programs, some of which are new.
       The offerings include free literacy tutoring for elementary- and middle-school students. To schedule an appointment or volunteer as a tutor, call 314-0242 and ask for John.
       There are also athletic activities available, such as Youth Volleyball League games, which are on Friday nights, and adult basketball and dodge ball, which are on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
       The center started Country Western Dance Nights, which are currently on Thursdays, but may be moved to Fridays. It is free and from 6 to 8 p.m. Free child care is also being offered for dancing hours.
      
       Parks Department Seeks Volunteers
       Edgewood Parks and Recreation is looking for volunteers.
       The town department has many opportunities for anyone looking to give a little time to recreation in Edgewood.
       Several working groups meet to come up with recreation ideas. Some of those groups include trails and open space, stewardship program development, events, wildlife safe passage and development of Section 16.

       Grocery Welcomes Your Rebate Check
       Smith's Food and Drug stores will add a little extra money on gift cards bought using income tax or tax rebate checks.
       Customers can get anywhere from $30 to $120 on a gift card purchased with tax checks until July 1. Customers who load $300 onto a Smith's gift card will get an extra $30 credit. Those who load $600 on a gift card will get $60 extra and those who load $1,200 on a card will receive $120 more.
       The amounts correspond with the amounts on tax rebate checks, however, anyone not wanting to use their government checks can pay with a personal check or credit card.
      
       Bookmobile Won't Visit Some Sites
       The State Library's bookmobile will no longer be making stops in Edgewood and Estancia.
       The final stops for the bookmobile will be made May 8 and June 5.
       According to a news release, the growth of the libraries in both communities has caused the bookmobile to stop its runs to Edgewood and Estancia.
      
       School Program Needs Volunteers
       The Aim Higher program at A. Montoya Elementary School is looking for volunteers for the 2008-2009 school year.
       Aim Higher has adults from the community come in and help first- and second-graders with reading.
       No special training is required and training is provided to all new volunteers. Tutoring days are Tuesday through Friday for two 45-minute blocks. Volunteers can choose to tutor one or two days a week.
