Gardeners Invited To Enter Fair Show
Members of the Moriarty Garden Club are encouraging area gardeners to enter flowers in the Torrance County Fair on Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. Please note that this is the day after the check-in day for other indoor exhibits.
The flower show has three parts: Horticulture, Design and Youth divisions.
The Horticulture Division includes individual flowers or groups of the same flower. All cut flowers grown by gardeners are acceptable even if they are not listed in the fair book.
It is best to cut flowers in the evening. Remove leaves from the bottom portion of stem, but leave at least two leaves on the stem for display. Place flowers immediately in warm water, cutting the stems again underwater. Leave the container in a cool spot overnight. This 'hardening process' will keep flowers fresh for several days.
The Design Division is for flower arrangements created with natural floral material grown or purchased by the exhibitor. Exhibitors are encouraged to enter several arrangements. There is a class for novice designers.
The Youth Division is for preschoolers through 17-year-olds. Youth exhibitors do not have to be members of 4-H or FFA to enter the flower show. A parent may enter exhibits if the child is not available during the check-in hours.
Torrance County Fair books are available at local feed stores and government offices. The books give more details about the fair. For more information about the flower show, call Georgia Overlander 832-4558.
