      Cross on South 14 To Be Cleaned Up
There will be a cleanup and rehab of the white cross on N.M. 337 (known as South 14) in Tijeras on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The cross marks the place where Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy James McGrane was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Tijeras in 2006. There is a plan to place a permanent, lighted flag at the location on Sept. 11.
       
       Meeting on Animal Rules Additions
Bernalillo County Commissioner Michael Brasher is hosting a public meeting on proposed Bernalillo County animal control ordinance amendments on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras. For more information, call 314-0280.
       
       Udall Will Visit Edgewood School
Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., plans to be at Edgewood Elementary School on Aug. 19 from noon to 2 p.m., according to an announcement made at the June 16 Edgewood Town Council meeting by Sarah Silverstein, one of Udall's campaign representatives.
       She said that Udall, a candidate for U.S. Senate, may be accompanied by a few other Democrats: Martin Heinrich, a candidate for the 1st Con-gressional District, and Ben Ray Luján, a candidate for the 3rd Con-gressional District. Brian Colón, chairman of the New Mexico Democratic Party, is also invited, and a campaign representative for Barack Obama may also make an appearance, Silverstein said.
       
       EMHS Night Under The Stars Aug. 23
The East Mountain High School Foundation's Eighth Annual Night Under the Stars Gala will be held Aug. 23 at the Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course from 6 to 10 p.m. The event will include a light buffet, cash bar and music by the school's World Percussion Ensemble, silent auction and a million-dollar prize for a hole-in-one shot on the golf course.        Edgewood Festival Showcases Art
A juried, multimedia art exhibit will be featured at the Edgewood Celebration & Harvest Festival, Aug. 23 and 24.
       Participating artists are: Diane Buster, Thais Haines, Carolyn Lindsey, Jane Mahon, Deb Matthew, Albert Noyer, Becky Ramotowski, Katy Widger and Dawn Young. The show will be at Wildlife West Nature Park.

       Get Water Rights Queries Answered
A representative from the Office of the State Engineer, District 1, will be in the USDA Forest Service office in Estancia on Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions about water rights and related issues. Residents can also declare ground or surface water rights for drilling new wells then. The building in on the west side of Main Street at the south end of town.        Celebration Adds Sports Contests
The Deputy James McGrane East Mountain Celebration will be held on Sept. 5, 6 and 7 at Vista Grande Community Center.
       This year there will be three sporting events: an adult softball tournament, youth basketball tournament and a 3-kilometer (1.86-mile) trail run/walk. The proceeds from the sporting events will go to advanced officer survival training for law enforcement officers throughout the state through a fund set up by the parents of James McGrane, a Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Tijeras in 2006.
       The sporting events will be in addition to the celebration's usual complement of bands, information booths, food booths and other weekend activities.
       
       Diabetes Cooking School in Sept.
New Mexico State University is holding a four-week diabetes cooking school at the Lions Club in Moriarty. Participants will receive recipe booklets, prepare meals and taste foods made with reduced fat, sugar and salt. The class is free but is limited to 25 participants. The first session is Sept. 4, and it meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; participants must commit to attending every class. Call 256-4790 for more information.
