       Used Hearing Aids, Glasses Wanted
Used hearing aids and eyeglasses can be donated to the Sandia Mountain Lions Club in boxes placed throughout the East Mountains. These items will be recycled to persons in third world countries through the efforts of Lions members and organizations concerned with providing vision and hearing assistance to the needy.
Any hearing aids and prescription glasses can be placed in donation boxes at these locations: East Mountain Chamber of Commerce in the Tijeras Visitors Center, East Mountain Library, Village of Tijeras offices, Los Vecinos Community Center, all located in Tijeras. In Cedar Crest, boxes are at McLeod Medical Center, Dr. James Retzer DDS, Cedar Crest Vision Center, Kokopelli's Restaurant, and Cedar Point Grille. Sam's Club on Eubank in Albuquerque also has a box.
These collections are part of the service offered by local Lions to assist efforts in sight preservation around the world. The Club also sponsors the New Mexico Eye Van which provides vision screening at various community activities throughout the year.
The Sandia Mountain Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. For more information about local club activities and membership, call President Jim Medford at 281-5373.

       Manzano Cleaning Up After Flood
A Sunday rainstorm wreaked havoc on Manzano High School, flooding classrooms, offices and the gym.
When workers came in Monday morning, they found 2 inches of water in the hallways, said John Dufay, director of maintenance for Albuquerque Public Schools.
He said crews would work through the night Monday to clean up the flooding. Their priority was the gym floor, which Dufay said was under an inch of water with an unknown amount stewing underneath.
Workers may have to cut the gym floor open to drain the water beneath it and dehumidify the hardwood. In the worst-case scenario, Dufay said, the entire floor will have to be replaced.
He said that APS won't know the extent of the damage until the cleanup is finished but that the flooding won't affect the start of the fall semester.

       Burned Area Mulch Project Begins
A part of the Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation efforts are under way on the Big Springs Fire area.
A straw mulching project began Aug. 3 to treat 1,210 acres within the burn perimeter. Applying straw mulch using weed-free straw helps provide temporary cover to mitigate erosion on areas burned as a result of the fire. Straw mulch also helps to retain moisture from rains to encourage grass seed to germinate and grow. The mulch is applied with helicopters to treat large areas, or by hand to treat smaller sites.
In late July, a seeding project was completed on approximately 2,000 acres of burned land within the Big Springs Fire area, during which a fixed wing airplane (crop duster) applied approximately 10 pounds of seed per acre. The straw mulch will be applied to most of this seeded area, and the two treatments will work together to establish new growth and lessen the effects of erosion. Other upcoming rehabilitation projects for the Big Springs Fire area include road work, pumping and preparing a water basin at Novillo Canyon for future runoff, and the replacement of fence line damaged in the fire.
These applications are authorized for National Forest lands only although there may be some slight drift from aerial seeding and mulching onto private land.

       Outing To Benefit Military Families

The organization will put up families in a hotel, feed them and present them with a plaque, homemade quilt and engraved brick to be placed at the Veterans Memorial Park in Albuquerque.
Cost to play in the event is $100 per person.
