Coopers Celebrate 50th Anniversary
Robert Williams and Kathleen Mastel Cooper recently observed their 50th wedding anniversary.
Bob and Kay were married March 29, 1958, at the Newman Center on the campus of the University of New Mexico.
On March 29, they spent a quiet day in their old adobe house in Cedar Crest, their home for nearly 49 years.
The Coopers have two sons and two daughters, Timothy Hugh and his wife, Karen, of Sebastopol, Calif.; Amy Atchley and her husband, Kent, of La Madera in the Sandias; Benjamin Robert, who lives east of Edgewood; and Pamela Hutchison and her husband, James, who live in the Tablazon area east of Tijeras. They have six grandchildren, Jessica and Graeme Cooper of California; Sarah Atchley Bondeson of Virginia and Rachael Atchley of Texas; and Cassandra and Courtney Hutchison of the East Mountains.
Bob was born in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1946. He earned a degree from the University of New Mexico and taught school for nearly a decade, first at Valley High School and later as head of the history department at Albuquerque Academy. He worked summers for the U.S. Forest Service and fought fires in nine Western states. For more than 20 years, Bob was a legislative aide and bill analyst for the New Mexico state Senate.
Kay was born in Faith, S.D., the youngest of seven. She earned a degree in music and education from the Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. After teaching in Wyoming, she followed her brother, Bill Mastel, to Albuquerque in 1957, where she met and married Bob Cooper. She taught at Eubank Elementary School, then became a full-time mother for their four children. She became noted for her cooking skills on a wood-burning stove, for her extensive garden, for teaching piano to local children and for her skill as a writer. After her children were grown, she returned to work full time as librarian at San Antonito Elementary School.
