Estancia Valley Standings Posted
The 2010 Estancia Valley Youth Rodeo series will conclude Aug. 14 and 15 at Moriarty's Heritage Arena, Estancia Valley Rodeo Association President Jeff Herndon said. Competition starts at 9 a.m. each day. No day money will be paid. Prizes will be awarded at an end-of-series banquet. Contestants must have participated in at least three of the six rodeos this summer to receive awards. Here are the standings going into the series' final weekend: Rodeo To Raise Funds for Family The Estancia Valley Rodeo Association will conduct fundraisers for the family of Kenny McOsker at its youth rodeos on Aug. 14 and 15 at Moriarty's Heritage Arena, EVRA President Jeff Herndon said. McOsker, 34, incurred a head injury while riding a bronc at a rodeo in Galisteo on July 18 and subsequently died. The Edgewood resident was married and had three children, with a fourth on the way. Donation cans will be set up and "possibly a raffle" will be conducted on both days, Herndon said. Donations can also be made to any Wells Fargo Bank. McOsker's funeral is Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Moriarty Civic Center. Players Compete Lifting Weights The Moriarty High football team will host its annual Night of Champions at the school's John B. Salvo Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a news release from Stewart Burnett, the event coordinator and a Pintos assistant coach. The Night of Champions is a team and individual weight lifting competition which pits Moriarty's gridiron athletes against each other. Admission is free. For information, call Burnett at 514-2484. Pintos Seek More Football Players The Moriarty High football team needs more players, Pintos coach Bob Allcorn said Monday. He said there will be a mandatory meeting for all current and prospective players at the school's John B. Salvo Gymnasium on Tuesday. The meeting will start at about 7 p.m., immediately following the team's Night of Champions weight-lifting exhibition. For information, call Allcorn at 463-3559. Vipers Fifth In AABC Regional The Moriarty Vipers took fifth place at the American Amateur Baseball Congress South Plains Regional Pee Wee Reese Division Tournament in Farmington, Vipers coach Denny Young said Monday. In the 12-and-under tourney, Moriarty lost its first game to the Four Corners Black Sox 5-3 in the 12-and-under tourney that began July 20 and ran through Saturday. The Vipers then defeated the Milan (N.M.) Angels 12-4, before they were eliminated by Colorado's Phillies 5-4 in extra innings. The Phillies are out of the La Plata County, Colo., area. Young said the Dallas Mustangs won the eight-team competition and qualified for the AABC World Series in Puerto Rico. "We played good defense," Young said. "We just didn't hit the ball very well." Moriarty defeated the Longmont (Colo.) Royals 7-1 on Monday in the first round of the 19-team American Amateur Youth Baseball Alliance 12U tournament on Monday. The AAYBA competition, being played in the Denver area, continues through Saturday. Pintos Golf Coach Decides To Quit Tony Flores, Moriarty High's golf coach, recently resigned, and the school is now looking for someone to replace him, the school's athletic director said Monday. The Pintos boys were the District 5-4A runners-up during the 2009-10 season, but they did not qualify for state as a team. Two Moriarty boys, for the first time in school history, qualified for state as individuals. The Pintos did not field a full girls team last school year. No girls qualified for state. Pintos' Stats Tell The Baseball Tale Here are the statistical boxes, according to the Telegraph's score book, for the 17-and-under Moriarty Pintos' run through the double-elimination state American Amateur Baseball Congress Don Mattingly Division Tournament at Valley High's diamond earlier this month. The Pintos placed second. Their foes included the Albuquerque Shockers, Albuquerque Dynamite and Española Storm. Pintos Sports Passes on Sale Season and yearly athletic passes for Moriarty High sporting events are on sale now, according to a news release from the school's athletic office. Passes may be bought at the athletic office, which is off the lobby of John B. Salvo Gymnasium, before the start of the fall season. Fall-season passes cost $25 (adults) and $15 (students and seniors over age 60), which provides access to 11 football games, six volleyball matches and 18 soccer games, the release indicated. A yearly pass runs $60 (adults) and $30 (students). Moriarty High students and employees with an identification card are admitted free. Passes are good for regular-season games only. Old Timer's Day Rodeo Saturday The Torrance County Fairgrounds arena in Estancia will be the venue for the Old Timer's Day Rodeo, a junior competition, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Registration will run from 8 to 11 a.m. Cash only. Be Tough, Wear Pink at Rodeo Mountainair Gymkhana Rodeo has proclaimed Sunday as its Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day. The final rodeo of the 2010 MGR youth rodeo series, which will start about 8 a.m. and run until about 6 p.m. at the Mountainair Rodeo Grounds, will benefit Torrance County residents who are fighting cancer. High School Seeks Diamond Skipper The deadline to apply for the open Moriarty High varsity baseball head coach's position has been extended to Aug. 6, according to a news release from the school's athletic director.
