The Manzano High girls swimming team qualified its third and final relay for the state meet during the Albuquerque Public Schools Combined (Double-Quad) Meet at the West Mesa Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Monarchs "A" team of junior Jessica Contreras, junior Marissa Spencer, freshman Gabrielle Torres and sophomore anchor Alexis Wylie — Spencer and Wylie reside in the East Mountains — clocked the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay in 4 minutes, 12.87 seconds, just two one-hundreths of a second faster than the state qualification cut. The Manzano girls had qualified in the 200 medley and 200 free relays earlier in the season. "We made that last relay by the skin of our teeth," Monarchs coach Tammy Wilson said with a relieved smile after the relay's fifth-place finish. On the individual front, sophomore Courtney Brooks earned her ninth straight 1-meter diving meet victory with 225.90 points during the combined diving event Friday at the Valley Pool. Brooks also previously qualified for state, and she remains undefeated this season. Brooks' freshman teammate, Kylie Pepe, scored a 161.90 for third place in diving. She qualified for state for the first time. "Kylie was a surprise for us," Wilson said. "That was only her third meet. I didn't even know she was diving (in that diving has a separate coach). I didn't even have her on my roster for her first meet." In addition, Wylie had already qualified in the 50 free and the 100 backstroke. Spencer, who was only 0.87 seconds off the qualification standard Saturday in the 50 free, continues to gun for a state berth. Manzano, overall, placed fifth at the eight-team meet with 233 points, and La Cueva took the team title with 528. Wylie was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:33.40) and the 100 free (59.92). The Monarchs' all-East Mountains contingent of Wylie, freshman Maddy Halpern, sophomore Samantha Sword-Fehlberg and Spencer were eighth in the 200 medley relay with a state qualifying time of 2:09.80. The District 4-1A/5A Championships are set for Feb. 13 at the West Mesa facility, and the state meet will be held at Albuquerque Academy on Feb. 19-20. The Monarchs' boys team placed seventh overall on Saturday with 92 points. Eldorado won with 473. Manzano was paced by sophomore Caleb Torres, who was sixth in the 100 free in 54.95. Torres was about 1.28 seconds shy of the state mark with a ninth-place finish in the 50 free at 24.87. No Monarchs boys, with only two meets left before state, have qualified for state yet, individually or in a relay. "We're trying in the (200) medley and 200 (free relays)," Wilson said. "But we were missing Dylan (Reames); That hurt us. We're close in those two relays, but not really close, like 3 seconds off."
