Estancia High's Derek Georgia is the Mountain View Telegraph Athlete of the Week.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior wide receiver, will sign a letter of intent to play junior college football for the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell during a ceremony at the Bears' gym today at 2 p.m. He will report to NMMI for the 2010 fall semester.

The Broncos' offer came despite Georgia incurring a season-ending knee injury during a home game against Tucumcari on Oct. 16. Georgia was, however, named to the all-District 2-2A first team and, even with the extended layoff, he led Estancia in receiving yards for the entire year with 25 catches for 530 yards.

The 17-year-old multi-sport athlete is sitting out the current basketball season and is expected to be on the sidelines for the spring track season as he continues to rehabilitate his knee. But Georgia's submitted game film and his speed, as reflected in his bronze-medal finish in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2009 state Class 2A boys track meet, helped convince NMMI he was their man.

Derek, who lives eight miles west of Estancia, is the son of Susan and Scott Georgia, the latter of whom is an assistant boys track and field coach at EHS.
