Youth Free-Throw Event Saturday
The Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championships, for boys and girls 10 through 14, will be held at Roosevelt Middle School in Tijeras beginning at noon Saturday. Registration deadline is Friday. Registration info can be received over the phone or via e-mail, but the registration form then would have to be filled out on the day of the competition. The Knights of Columbus, an international Catholic family fraternal service organization, sponsors the event annually. Winners progress through local, district and state competitions, and international victors are announced by the organization's headquarters based on the results from the state competitions. . Tennis, Soccer Coaches Needed Manzano High is looking for two new boys coaches, one for tennis and the other for soccer, the school's athletic director, recently announced. Stephanie Gurule-Smith, who guided the Monarchs for a single season, said she resigned a couple of weeks ago in order to take a teaching position and be the boys' tennis coach at Albuquerque High. Manzano was the District 5-5A runner-up at 2-1 last year, and it had an overall record of 3-9. Tristan Lloyd, who was the soccer coach for two years, said he resigned Jan. 21 so he could concentrate on his studies at the University of New Mexico. The Monarchs were 4-16, 1-7 this past fall. Softball League Holds Registration The Moriarty Girls Fast-Pitch Association, a youth softball organization, will be holding its registration session for the summer season at the Moriarty Holiday Inn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. All girls, 4 to 18, are eligible to play. There are no geographical restrictions. Proof of age must be presented. The early registration fee is $25 per player.
