Little Kids' Rodeo Standings Posted
The current top three 6-and-under cowboys and cowgirls in the 2009 Mountainair Gymkhana Rodeo series' overall all-around standings for the 0- to 6-year-old age group include: 1. Quincy Sullivan, 107 points; 2. Jake Orris, 106; and 3. Justin Tapia, 96. The above standings include points scored during the June 28 Gymkhana. The Gymkhana season continues with its fifth of six monthly rodeos on July 19 at the Mountainair Rodeo Grounds. Competition will start at about 8 a.m. The MGR is a family-oriented rodeo with mostly youth riders, 18-and-younger, participating. The final Gymkhana rodeo of the summer will be held Aug. 2 and will have a special theme, "Tuff Enough to Wear Pink," in which participants and fans are asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. Softball All-Stars Done for Season East Mountain Little League softball players augmented Zia Little League on two all-star squads during the District 5 tournaments. Here's how they fared: Majors (11- and 12-year-olds): Altamont Little League eliminated Zia 10-1 in the first round of the losers' bracket at Thunderbird Little League's fields at Comanche South Park on June 30. Altamont went on to win the district title with a 10-9 victory over Atrisco Valley on Friday. Minors (9-10): Mile High Little League beat Zia 10-4 on June 27 in the first round of the losers' bracket at Thunderbird's fields, thus booting Zia from postseason play. Altamont defeated Mile High 4-2 for the district crown on July 2. Estancia Valley Rodeos Continue The Estancia Valley Youth Rodeo Series will continue on Aug. 22-23 and Sept. 19-20 at Moriarty's Heritage Arena, said Jeff Herndon, the president of the Estancia Valley Rodeo Association. The entry deadline is 9 a.m. on both days. The official times for the EVRA rodeos held on Saturday and Sunday were not received before the Telegraph's deadline. The rodeos' events, for cowboys and cowgirls ages 1-18, have the usual fare, including bull, steer and sheep riding; and barrels, poles, flags, calf roping, team roping, goat tying, breakaway, dummy roping and lead line, depending on the age group. Awards will be presented at the end of the season. There is a $50 per-family membership fee to be able to compete in the series, and it will cost $10 per individual for a nonmember, one-day participation pass. Then for each event, other than bull riding, that requires the EVRA to provide an animal, the participant fee is $20. For timed events, it's $10. Chilili Land Grant To Host Rodeos The Chilili Rodeo Club will host ranch-style rodeos on Sunday and Aug. 30 as well as its 14th annual Bull-A-Rama on Aug. 16, according to the club's 14th-year president, Fernando Gutierrez. All start at 1 p.m. Events will include sheep, calf, bareback, saddle-bronc and bull riding. The Bull-A-Rama — and only the Bull-A-Rama, Gutierrez emphasized — will have an added $1,000 bonus thrown into the pot to be awarded to the Aug. 16 bull riding winner. Moriarty Grappling Camps Scheduled Moriarty High will host the Pinto All-American Youth Wrestling Camp on July 17-18 for athletes in grades 1-12. Arsenia Barksdale, a 2009 NCAA Division II champion from Adams State, will be the featured clinician. The camp director is Moriarty coach Dennis Friedland. Former Pinto wrestler Bradley Spence also will be on hand. The camp will run from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 17 and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on July 18. Monarchs Soccer Camps Coming Manzano High will host youth soccer camps for boys and girls on Aug. 3-7, according to a news release from the school's athletic director, Bob Kelly. The morning session, 9 to 11 a.m., is reserved for 5- to 13-year-old participants; and the period from 4 to 6 p.m. is specifically for high school players, rising eighth- through 12th-graders. Get in Shape Now For Girls Soccer The Moriarty High Lady Pintos Soccer Preseason Summer Conditioning Program, for incoming female freshmen through seniors, is right around the corner, said Valerie Luker, the Moriarty girls assistant coach and event coordinator. Here's the program's plan, 5 to 7 p.m. each day: Tuesday through July 16 — at Edgewood Elementary July 21 — at Moriarty High July 22 — at Edgewood Elementary July 23 — at Moriarty High July 28 — at Moriarty High July 29 — at Edgewood Elementary July 30 — at Moriarty High Cost is $15 per participant for the conditioning program, $10 of which will go to cover the athletes' participation in the Moriarty High Mini-Soccer Camp from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on Aug. 3-6. New Pinto girls head coach Larry Denniston will be on hand for the mini-camp. 16-and-under and 14U girls are encouraged to attend the training program and mini-soccer camp. . Fair Junior Rodeo Set for August 14 The Torrance County Fair Junior Rodeo will be held on Aug. 14, said Leslie Chavez, one of the rodeo's co-superintendents. Registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m., and the competition will start at about 10 at the fairgrounds in Estancia. Age divisions range from 6-and-under to 16-18. Pinto Volleyball Camps in August The Moriarty High School Volleyball Camp for prep girls, eighth- through 12th-graders-to-be, will be held Aug. 3-6 from 1 to 4 p.m. daily, at the school's All-Sports Practice Facility, according to an event flyer. Cost is $65 per participant. Camp will include instruction and play, team talks, a video, individual instruction and a T-shirt. The Pintos' camp for rising fifth- through seventh-graders will take place on Aug. 3-6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the high school's All-Sports Practice Facility. Cost is $65 for instruction, skill drills, videos, game play and a camp T-shirt. Campers must bring shoes, knee pads, water bottles and braces. Rockin' Horse Cuttin', Barrelin' The Rockin' Horse Ranch Arena, located north of Moriarty and to the east of N.M. 41 near Western Road, will host New Mexico Cutting Horse Association competitions on Aug. 7-9 and Sept. 5-7, and the NMCHA Finals on Oct. 10-11, said Patty Wright, the facility's spokeswoman. Rockin' Horse will also host barrel racing competitions on Aug. 15-16, Sept. 16-18 and Oct. 3-4. The RHR Barrel Racing Finals are set for Nov. 7-8.
