CASA Program Needs Volunteers

Rio Grande Valley Court Appointed Special Advocate Association is looking for a few good volunteers, said CASA Executive Director Audrey Henry.

"There's been an increase in children entering foster care so we need more volunteers," Henry said.

She added that large increases of children needing foster care families often happens each year when school begins.

Henry would like to add five more volunteers to her staff.

CASA volunteers check up on children living with foster care parents and make suggestions as to what would be in the best interest of the child to the judge involved.

Each volunteer must put in 30 hours of initial training, which can be done in a classroom or with self-study guides.

Additional Fire Department Staff

The recent graduation of the 2008 Fire Cadet Academy means there will be two additional firefighters at the Edgewood Main Fire Station, which serves the southern part of Santa Fe County.

That's according to Santa Fe County Fire Department Assistant Chief John Wheeler.

"Edgewood is really going to benefit from this," Wheeler said. "The population there merits it."

Starting as soon as November, and certainly by early 2009, there will be six full-time firefighters at the Edgewood station. There are now four.

Graduation for the 16 cadets, which included two paramedic firefighters, took place Wednesday in Santa Fe.

EMHS Teacher Gets $10K Grant

East Mountain High School teacher Jim Smith is one of five recipients nationwide of a $10,000 McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation grant.

The grant, which is renewable for three years depending on eligibility, will fund the Student Inquiry and Lesson Study in the Sciences at East Mountain High School program.

Using Lesson Study as their professional development program, Smith and his colleagues will help students learn to do science rather than learn about science. The science department in the high school will gather input from parents and students as they collaborate to form a vision, mission statement and activities. They will also combine their instructional spaces and meet together to reflect on their teaching. The team will disseminate their findings through videotapes that document the Lesson Study process and professional conferences.

Since 2001, the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation has made a commitment to provide more than $895,000 in scholarships and grants.
