The filing date for state and county races was Tuesday. East Mountains and Estancia voters will see a few new names on the ballot and a lot of familiar ones.
A pair of incumbent state representatives with ties to the East Mountains won't be seeking re-election in the fall. Neither state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones, R-Albuquerque, nor Rep. Kathy McCoy, R-Cedar Crest, whose district also includes parts of Torrance and Sandoval counties, filed a declaration of candidacy on Tuesday, the official day for New Mexico candidates to file for a range of elected positions. Arnold-Jones has an Albuquerque address but also is married to John Jones, chief operations officer for Entranosa Water and Wastewater Association, which serves the East Mountains. Arnold-Jones, currently a state representative, is seeking the Republican nomination for governor. Meanwhile, McCoy said she decided against seeking a fourth term to the District 22 seat out of frustration over how the Democratic-controlled Legislature is run. She has complained that, as a Republican in the House, it is difficult to avoid being sidelined. Two current PRC commissioners — David King and Sandy Jones — are vacating their seats this fall. King lives in the Edgewood area. District 5 Bernalillo County Commissioner Michael Brasher also is not running for re-election. Brasher is probably a familiar face to just about anyone who has held a public meeting in either Los Vecinos or Vista Grande community center. He has hosted a number of seminars on emergency services in the area and is known for his work to improve public safety in the area. Democrat Janet Saiers and Republican Wayne Johnson are running for the seat. In Torrance County, several familiar faces are in the running for county offices. There are officially eight candidates for Torrance County sheriff. Three have already served in the position, with incumbent Clarence Gibson filing, with Don Lyles and Pete Golden also in the running. There are two open County Commission seats, with current Commissioners Jim Frost and Tito Chavez ending their terms in 2010. New Mexico's primary elections will be held June 1, and the general election Nov. 2. Candidates for East Mountains and Estancia Valley offices follow. |
