The Estancia police and fire station may soon be drying out.

After months of a leaky roof, the town board of trustees is looking at declaring the situation an emergency and awarding a bid to repair the roof.

Action was tabled on passing a resolution and awarding the bid to one of three contractors at the board's regular meeting Monday.

The bids were from A-Wall Builders, Empire Roofing Co., and Alternative Building Solutions. The prices were between $20,985 and $38,620.

The question of warranties was the main sticking point. A-Wall offered a 15-year warranty, with Empire stipulating a 5-year warranty, and Alternative Building Solutions offering a 7-year warranty.

"Because all three roofs were different materials and we're not sure of the extent of the warranties, it's not really fair to compare the roofs without more information," Town Clerk/Treasurer Tammy Meyer wrote in an e-mail Tuesday.

Trustee Josie Richards suggested having the potential contractors come to the next board meeting to explain what their offer entails and answer any questions.

Trustees weighed the pros and cons of each bid.

Alternative Building Solutions is owned and operated by an Estancia couple, who offered to allow the town to pay half the cost now and half in the next fiscal year, beginning in July. However, the seven-year warranty worried the trustees.

"I'm thinking it should be longer that," Richards said. "I'm hoping we won't have to deal with a situation like this again for a long time."

The three companies will be invited to attend the next meeting, March 22, to answer the board's questions.

In other town business:

Ted Barela was sworn in as mayor by Judge Steve Jones after winning the March 2 election.

The board passed a resolution proclaiming April Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The board also passed a resolution adjusting amounts for the 2010 Municipal Arterial Program (MAP) money from the state. The contract for the MAP money for 2009-10 was signed Oct. 7 and reduced Oct. 31, due to the state's budget crisis. The original amount was for $201,569 with the town's match of $50,392. The new amount is $158,361 with a $39,590 match for the town.

The town's organizational meeting in which Barela will appoint department heads will be at the next board meeting, March 22. Barela said he wanted to meet individually with the department heads, which is why he postponed the meeting originally scheduled for Monday.
