There's a new mayor in town.
When the votes were counted Tuesday night, unofficial results showed Moriarty business owner and city Councilor Ted Hart upset long-time incumbent Adan Encinias by just more than 60 votes. Encinias had served as mayor since 1995. Hart and Encinias campaigned outside the polls most of election day, holding signs, waving at passing cars, and visiting with passing folks. Hart, owner of Hart's Hardware, said he was still soaking in the news, among other things on Wednesday morning. "I definitely want to thank the voters," he said. "I think I'm still soaking in all that sun from yesterday." His first order of business as mayor is to get organized, Hart said. "There will be some announcements soon," he said. The two four-year city council terms will be filled by incumbent Larry Irvin and former Councilor Dennis Shanfeldt. Irvin and Shanfeldt took the most votes with 283 and 220, respectively. The two beat Kimberly Garcia and Arthur Page, who both garnered a significant number of votes with 195 and 176. Irvin was attending a funeral Wednesday and was unavailable for comment by deadline. Shanfeldt, who is returning to the council had some words for the voters. "I want to thank everybody who voted and extra thanks to everyone who voted for me," he said. The newly-elected officials will be sworn in by Judge Steve Jones at 6 p.m. Friday at the Civic Center. Torrance County now has two mayors by the name of Ted. Ted Barela, who has served as mayor of Estancia for the past year-and-a-half, was elected over Margarita Hibbs and John Bailey. Barela received 151 of the votes, with Hibbs receiving 78 and Bailey with 38. "I can't express enough gratitude to the people that have supported and trusted me," Barela said Wednesday. "The passion has always been to try to have better, get better, do better. The people have trusted me and I will try to get them there. It took 100 years to get Estancia in the condition it's in now and I hope to continue moving forward and make it even better." Trustee Sylvia Chavez was re-elected to a two-year term, with two four-year term positions going to incumbent Michelle Dunlap and newcomer Ivonne Riley. "It is with great humility and honor that I send my sincere 'thank you' to everyone that voted for me," Riley said. "I appreciate the opportunity that you have bestowed on me." Dunlap was also thankful to the people of Estancia. "I am very blessed to live here and I am looking forward, along with the mayor and fellow board members, to moving Estancia forward while ensuring that we maintain and preserve the roots, security, lifestyle and value of a rural community; what we have here is priceless! Thank you again for your support." Bruce Dile was re-elected to the position of municipal judge over Morrow Hall. In Mountainair, there's also a new mayor. Former Torrance County commissioner Chester Riley Jr. was elected by a vast majority with 268 votes. The candidate with the next number of votes was Dennis Fulfer with 71, followed by Ed von Kutzleben with 24 and incumbent Velta Gilley receiving 21 votes. Frank Anaya and Jeremy LaJeunesse were elected to four-year terms. Riley said his first order of business is to meet with the council to brainstorm ideas and to get on the same page. "I do want to thank all the voters and everybody who supported me in Mountainair," Riley said. "We need to look at what the council wants to do and get things all lined up. We have a great council and I think the council is the main thing to help you as mayor." |
