Voters in the Estancia and Mountainair school districts will head to the polls March 30 to determine whether the districts can raise and spend money.

In Estancia, voters will decide whether to issue $2.5 million in bonds for a new athletic complex. In Mountainair, voters will be asked to approve a mill levy that will raise about $139,000.

The Estancia Board of Education authorized the election at its January board meeting. The bond money would be used for a new all-weather track field, football field and stadium; the remodeling of the agriculture building; and to provide matching funds for roofing needs.

According to fliers circulated by the Estancia Municipal School District, voting for the bond would not increase taxes. The last time the district went to voters for a bond issue was in 1999, according to the literature. Approval of the bond would also mean the security of $1 million allocated to the district from the Public Schools Capital Outlay Council.

A second question on the ballot will be the capital improvements, or 2 mil, levy. The levy has been in place for the Estancia Schools since 1976, according to the literature. Every six years, the levy must be renewed by voters. According to the February newsletter, the school district may use allocated funds to provide maintenance; improve facilities and grounds; purchase and repair equipment; and more. The state provides matching funds for the improvements.

Mountainair residents will also go to the polls March 30 to approve about $139,000 through 2 mil levy. Jay Mortensen, Mountainair Public Schools superintendent, said the money will be used for small critical capital improvements. Examples of how past funding was used include for fire and electrical compliance in the high school gymnasium; heating and cooling units in the library and classrooms; and matching a state Department of Transportation grant for paving.

Mortensen urged voters to vote yes on the levy.

"These are critical funds," Mortensen said.

Voting in Mountainair will take place at the high school gymnasium from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30.

In Estancia, registered Torrance County voters who live within the boundaries of the Estancia Municipal School District may vote at the school cafeteria from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Absentee voting begins Friday, March 5, and the last day to vote in-person absentee is March 26.
