EMAS to Kick Off Season
Telegraph Staff Report
The East Mountain Artists Series will kick off its 2004/05 season with a performance by the Sierra Trio on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The trio will perform works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Ernesto Lecuona and Robert Volkmann.
The Sierra Trio includes pianist Monique Le Duc, EMAS founder and a graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, as well as the husband-and-wife duo of David and Anne Cole, violinist and cellist. The Trio's members first came together in performance in 1997 at the inaugural concert of the East Mountain Artists Series and have since become EMAS' Artists-in-Residence.
Leading off EMAS' ninth season is Beethoven's "Piano Trio No. 4." As a piano virtuoso, Beethoven reportedly had fire, brilliance and depth of feeling. This chamber work incorporates those qualities and reflects the evolution of his style from Classical into Romantic. The third movement, a theme with nine variations, especially offers the Trio an opportunity to emulate the composer's performance skills.
Tchaikovsky's "Canzonetta" comes from his cycle "The Months," originally a piano suite consisting of 12 short pieces, each typifying one month. This work, representing June, is a lyrical, programmatic creation.
Lecuona is known as the man who wrote "Malaguena." Born in Havana in 1895, Lecuona was an outstanding pianist who achieved distinction as both a songwriter and a contemporary classical composer. He was among the leading composers in early sound films, writing scores for many movies including "Always in My Heart," whose title song was a 1942 Oscar nominee for Best Song. The two selections from his "Suite Espagnole" have echoes of his Latin roots while maintaining a classical spirit.
The "Piano Trio No. 5" by 19th century composer Volkmann concludes the afternoon's concert. Volkmann was born in Germany in 1815, son of a church music director who schooled him in organ, piano, violin and cello. He composed with little acclaim until 1852, when his "Piano Trio in B-flat minor" caught the attention of Franz Liszt and first brought him renown. Most of Volkmann's compositions are for either solo piano or ensembles with piano.
The concert will be held at the Mountainside United Methodist Church at 4 Penny Lane in Cedar Crest, just off N.M. 14 about a mile north of I-40. Single adult tickets are $10. Prices for seniors, students and children are $8, $3 and $1 respectively. All tickets are available at the door.
Free refreshments and child care are provided. For more information call 281-4333 or 281-4648.
