Ansley hearing on hold until Aug. 28

The preliminary hearing in the criminal case of Torrance County Manager Joy Ansley has been postponed for a month. The new hearing date is Aug. 28.

A preliminary hearing for Ansley's alleged co-conspirator, Chris Valdez, has also be placed on hold for a month.

They each face 10 felony counts — four alleging fraud, five of making or permitting false documents, and one of conspiracy. Both have pleaded not guilty.

The state Attorney General's Office says that shortly after becoming manager, Ansley granted Valdez — an Estancia contractor she has described as a friend — special and unfair consideration regarding several county projects, a felonious arrangement that cost taxpayers about $500,000.

The case is scheduled to be heard by Judge Kenneth Martinez in the Bernalillo County Courthouse.
