Mountain race

The greater Albuquerque area's only snowshoe race was held last Saturday.

More than 150 racers were at the starting line at 10 a.m., ready to compete.

The front line of snowshoers ran, but there were certainly plenty of people who walked and took their time. They had at least two hours to make the 3.2-mile trip, after all.

The race is held every year at the top of the Sandia Mountains at 10,678 feet and is organized by the Friends of the Sandia Mountains, friendsofthesandias.org.

The award for fastest time this year went to Daryl Dagel, 37, who took 32 minutes to finish the race.

The youngest racer was 8-year-old Jacob Sussman, and the oldest was 84-year-old Otto Appenzeller. Both took less than an hour and a half to finish the race.
