White Collar Crimes Down

The good news: white collar crime, such as embezzlement, has gone down in Torrance County.

The bad news: 2011 had more violent crimes, according to Sheriff Heath White.

White said the major issues for the county in 2011 were methamphetamines and domestic violence. And, said White, violent crimes seem to be getting even more violent.

However, White had an overall positive view of crime statistics in the county over the past year.

“Torrance County has gotten better in the last two years as far as methamphetamines. We are still a long way from where we want to be, as far as controlling it. But, we are looking better,” said White.

Looking to the new year ahead, White said he would like to get his deputies better, updated equipment.

“The deputies don’t have in-car computers where they can run subjects or vehicles to see if they are stolen or wanted. They have to go over the radio,” said White. “Our radio system is still not where it needs to be. (There’s) a lot of dead spots in the county, where there’s no communication at all. Once you are in those areas you’re on your own, there is no back up coming.”

Also on the agenda for 2012, White said he would like to run in-school and after-school programs for kids, where domestic violence, sexual abuse and drug-related crimes are discussed.

As for White personally, he said he has enjoyed his first year of being sheriff.

“I’m loving it. It’s difficult and hard, and a lot of stress goes with the job, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s been a real exciting first year,” said White.
